Penske Truck Rental Break down
Penske Customer Service
Re: Rental contract #5231****
I rented a 16 ft Economy Van on Sept 13, 2015 at the The Colony, Tx. After driving two hours, the truck jerked, and the gears shifted down suddenly, and the speedometer stopped working, and all the dashboard lights came on – such as empty gas tank, AVS lights, brakes malfunction, parking break light, check engine light. I immediately pulled off the road, and call the customer assistance line to report the problem. They sent a mechanic and it took a 1 ½ hours for him to arrive. It was 91 degrees and around 3 pm. Needless to say it was extremely hot and uncomfortable. I was also very concerned about the continuous traffic as we waited on the shoulder of the highway. I had to weigh the safety to continue to drive with to be in a collision on the shoulder of the road. I drove slowly to the next exit and waited for the mechanic.
The mechanic arrived and I explained the problem with the truck. The mechanic checked for the dashboard warning lights problems and couldn’t figure it out because he didn’t have the computer sensor for the warning lights. He detached the electric cables from the battery and reset the system. The lights went off but it didn’t fix the problem. The mechanic said there was a problem, but he didn’t know what it was. He called Penske and told them of the problem and told them it was safe to drive the truck. When I spoke to the customer service representative, he mentioned this was the 4th time that they had reported problems with this particular truck. He stated he was not surprised at the incident.
I started driving again and in less than 2 minutes all the dashboard warning lights came on again, and the speedometer didn’t work and the truck gears shifted down again uncontrollably. The engine would work intermittently and then shift down. I was concerned about the safety for my son and myself. We stopped Muskogee, OK, the next major town and spent the night in a Hampton Inn.
We did not plan to spend the night. We were already behind schedule and had planned to drive most of the night. Due to the malfunctioning of the truck, we were severely delayed in our trip and incurred additional expenses.
At 9:30 pm, I called Penske customer service again and this time they transferred me to 24 hour road assistance. When I spoke to the representative, they mentioned that my case was closed which really upset me. Why was the case closed when I still have a truck that malfunctioned? I asked them why and he replied because I kept driving. I replied I kept driving because the mechanic said it was safe to drive, and I was told if I had any additional problems, I should call back. The representative was very rude to me after a long hot day on the side of the road. He suggested I go to a Penske service center at 9 am on the 14th.
We arrived at 9:15 am on the 14th at the service center; they were expecting us and were very attentive. It took an hour to repair the truck. The attendant used the computer sensor and mentioned there was a problem. He showed me the problem on the computer that there was an electrical short. He cleaned the connections of the wires to avoid additional shortages. He told me it was safe to drive. We left around 10:30 am, and I did not have an additional problem to arrive at my destination. (other than arriving very late)
When I turned in the truck at the Chicago Rockwell Truck Rental at 3928 N Rockwell during posted operating hours at 3pm Sept 16th, there was no one there. I called the posted number on the wall and no one answered. I didn’t know what to so I called Penske customer service. They tried to contact the company in Chicago and no one answered and she asked me to take the truck a Home Depot. This delay caused me to get caught in the Chicago traffic, even though I had planned to avoid the traffic. However, by this time, I was grateful that I was not driving a Penske rental truck.

Booked in advance by 20 days a 16 foot truck from Texas to Florida ans was called 5 minutes before pick up time to be told no truck available for at least 4 to 5 hours if then. We had friends leave work to help us load truck.
We raced to U-Haul which had 1 truck available and were on schedule in an hour. We were on our way to Florida when Penske called. Five minutes warning is not acceptable nor was there any concern about our dilemma.
Do not be tempted by their cheap rates. U - Haul told me this is much more common than you would think.
Great experience, thanks to Penske and Vinnie!
I hired a mover to relocate my furniture, but my fragile items, the things that were breakable, clothes, personal possessions, I chose to carry myself for fear of loss or damage. I also needed to tow my car to another state and the pricing of moving companies was ridiculously high!
Vinnie arranged from start to finish, first a 16 ft, then we changed to a 20 ft, and ended up with a 22 ft, plus the carrier (all four wheels up) for my Toyota. He was great during the emotional times of moving, and the horrible experiences I have had in the past with professional movers and even renting trucks over the years.
He was so patient when I had to keep calling for larger trucks, different carriers, changing dates (as I awaited the movers to finally arrive who were horrid!) and yet he never changed prices, never felt it was an issue, helped with getting more boxes, changed pickup location when Home Depot employees said they couldn't take responsibility to help me load my car (a woman alone, I just feared doing this myself despite the videos I watched on "how to..."), and Vinnie was absolutely amazing from start to finish! He went over and beyond the call of duty in Sterling, VA, and I arrived safe, sound, as well as my car, in Connecticut 10 hours later!
He even made suggestions on directions, where to get help, how to feel more confidant, whom to call if this or that happened....Nothing went wrong, the truck was NEW, the carrier was easy, and he made it all happen for me, when all I could do was wring my hands, anticipating the worst!
An amazing company, a true asset to the company, Vinnie Mascitelli, and a great experience overall for me! I would give 10 stars if I could, but I guess 5 is the limit :-)
Thank you, Vinnie, for all you have done to help this difficult move end happily ever after! Penske should be proud and thankful to have you as a manager/leader in their industry!

Awful experience with Penske-contracted movers (Simple Movers)
Simple Movers (SML) is contracted through Penske Trucks; to help with furniture loading and unloading.
When purchasing this service the company assured us that they would take care of our furniture, and that if there was damage during loading/unloading, SML would offer a fair compensation.
With these conditions, we believed nothing could go wrong. However, the move did not turn out to be what we had expected. We learned of extensive damage to several pieces of furniture when the truck was unloaded at our final destination. There were broken legs on furniture; several obvious scars and deep scratches in almost all of our pricey wooden furniture.
We filed a claim with SML complete with several photos of the damage. Nonetheless, SML insisted that the damage to our furniture occurred during transit, which they are not liable for.
We witnessed firsthand the unprofessionalism of their movers during the loading of the truck. For example, dropping a glass table; trying to move furniture through narrow doorways without moving furniture legs; yet attempted to squeeze the furniture through, damaging both the walls and furniture. It was quickly evident that these weren’t professional movers, buy simply paid laborers.
Do not use these movers if you value your furniture!

I must say the non management workers, the guys who actually work are helpful. But these so called supervisors and manegers should be retrained.
