Positive Experience Review

Rented from Las Vegas Durango Location. Shy of needing a designated Penske sign, they were polite, and professional, informative and could not ask for better service. Would rent from Storage One Durango location in a heart beat. Also Penske online reservation made my experience very positive. Hats off to Penske!!

Worst Truck Rental Experience ever. Check engine light, not aligned, doors flapped and leaked.

Please make sure this email is forwarded to whomever it needs to be in order for me to receive a response. I will be sure to write fair reviews on Penske Truck Rentals, anywhere and everywhere across the web, which I discover.

Rental Agreement #: 5016****

Truck Unit #: 622109

I recently booked a reservation for this past Saturday, March 7th. Upon picking up my 16' box truck, at Home Depot in Bel Air, MD, I discovered I didn't get a truck with a loading ramp, as requested; it had a powered lift gate. This was an issue because I had furniture that was too wide to fit on this lift gate. The gentleman told me "That's what they set you up with." I didn't have a lot of time to spare, since I had individuals already waiting at our first location for the move, so I didn't argue with this employee. Luckily I paid for the additional damage waiver, because the associate didn't even do a walk-around on the truck with me. He advised me he had already done one, and marked the scratches on the vehicle. If I didn't purchase the damage waiver, I would've made sure we started over, by going outside together to walk-around the vehicle to inspect it for all of the damage that was pre-existing. I started up the truck, and notice the check engine light lit. I advised the associate, and he replied, "Oh! It's a diesel... the check engine lights are ALWAYS on in diesels... it has something to do with that whole emissions thing; and since it's a diesel, it doesn't have emissions, so that's why it's on..." (I was an auto mechanic, and have worked in the automotive industry and in customer service for over 10 years. I know better than this.) I asked that he record this on the prior damage sheet, so it's documented. He advised, "Oh yeah, it's fine. Nobody's going to say anything when you return it." As I leave, I hit my first highway, and get the vehicle up to about 45 mph; the doors are both shaking, tremendously, the steering wheel is angled about a quarter to half way to the left, as I fight the vehicle to drive straight, and the entire truck is shaking badly. I've rented from Penske before, and am aware box trucks drive a little different than cars, but this was unlike any other rental box truck I've ever driven. It starts to rain, and water begins pouring in (more than just a couple drops), consistently, through the passenger's door (since it's flapping so much). This was the noisiest, most-shaky, uncomfortable rental truck I've ever driven.

As I leave my first stop, the check engine light still remains on, and two new lights come on; one is a blown smoke diagram, and the other is a message on the dash stating "Exhaust System Malfunction." Eventually the dash starts beeping, throughout my drive to my 2nd location. I am sure at this point, you can imagine my frustration.

I filled the fuel/diesel, and returned the truck with more diesel than when I rented it (above 3/4 tank). A different employee was there when I returned the truck, and he asked, "How was the truck?" I explained my situation (above) to him. He informed me he would enter some notes to Penske, on feedback, about my experience. Whether he did, or did not, I do not know; but I have yet to hear anything back from Penske, and it's been 5 days now. The Home Depot associate advised me I went OVER my expected mileage, and they had to charge me two dollars and twenty-five cents. Even with the additional fuel I put into the vehicle, I was still charged this additional fee.

As stated above, I work in customer service, and expect to hear back from Penske in a timely manner (especially since I have yet to hear back from them since the Home Depot employee submitted my feedback). If I were to treat a customer, throughout my work day, the way I was treated, and rented out a vehicle in the condition which I received, I wouldn't have a job the next day. This is absolutely unacceptable, and I demand being compensated for at least a portion of this rental bill. From here, I plan to make sure individuals are aware of my most recent Penske Rental experience (via review sites, forums, etc.).

Regards,

James Boyer

Home Depot's are the worst Penske locations to rent from! They don't care about Penske and it's customers.

They don't know anything! Sorry for what you had to deal with.

Low beam headlights aimed at oncoming drivers' eyes

I had a 26 foot box truck that had the low beam headlights aimed directly at oncoming drivers' eyes. On a two lane highway, heavy truck and auto drivers were flashing their high beams at me, some never dimmed, one pulled off the road and turned headlights off.

I thought I would be shot or have a head-on. Nothing I could do out in the boonies. Truck was loaded to 10k on the steering axle and 15k on the drive axle, certainly a balanced load. High beam dash indicator light was blindingly bright, if I could have used high beam.

To top it off, it was raining and the windshield washer fluid did next to nothing except oil the windshield. Beware this shoddy outfit.

Tedious online rental, charges higher than U-Haul

I reserved the truck online through Home Depot/Penske website. 9 steps to do this.

Not best user-friendly. No U-haul trucks were available -- I rent locally several times a year for my business. U-haul would have been $79 for truck (includes 30 miles free) and 40 Cents per mile over 30. Penske truck was $99.00 plus 99 cents per mile.

Time at Home Depot was 30 minutes to get the paperwork done. PENSKE WEBSITE IS SLOW SLOW SLOW. Same problem when I brought the truck back.

Would have saved $50 if U-haul had a truck available. Penske truck was fine -- just more expensive and ridiculous time for paperwork.

Biohazard Box Truck

Blood all over the inside of one of the two trucks I rented! I reserved two trucks one of the reservations got lost but they were able to get a truck from another location.

When I picked up the second truck I noticed it was dirty, at the time I thought it was from someone hauling tires. I wasn"t happy but I needed the truck. I loaded the "clean" truck first then I loaded the "dirty" truck by this time it was almost dark I had use the cargo light to see. I paid no intention to the condition of the truck these spots I thought were from tires.

I loaded in Missouri and took it to New Mexico. I unloaded the "dirty" truck in the morning as the sun was coming up and noticed a blood stain after unloading a few feet of the 26' truck. The first spot was nothing compared the the rest of the truck. the truck literally looked like a massacre happened on this truck.

After I had the truck completely unloaded I drove it straight to the drop off which happened to be a corporate location and went in asking for a manager. I told the manager that he needed to come out and look at the back of this truck and he did. He had a loss for words but ended up taking some pictures. We went back in side and he asked me when the truck was do back I told him "tomorrow" then he said it would be taken care of then.

I was flabbergasted. I thought he would call the police or atleast get me out of the rolling crime scene but he didn't. Since then I have spent the last six months trying to figure out what I was exposed to. I have been sent two lab reports that they claimed to have done on the truck(again no police).

The first lab report had a date discrepancy so I called and got another copy of the report this time the conclusions were different and that report had a date discrepancy also.

I believe both reports to have been falsified. I have spent the last six months wondering if I contracted something from this biohazard.

That's not blood. You were not *eeek* exposed to anything, and I'm sure they laughed at your looney tunes *** as soon as you walked out the door.

Guest

That is the varnish covering the wooden bars that has fallen off of the truck. That is not blood. It looks like something was spilled on the interior of the box.

Guest

might not have been blood. I'd imagine that

a) if you really thought it was blood you would have instantly called the police

b) if it was blood they would have sent the police to you

c) if it was something harmless like hydraulic fluid, they probably would not bother you with the details.

Calling fake on this. Someone who wants to throw some slander around because they got jaded on a bill or contract they didnt read/follow. To many things dont make sense.

Just sayin. :)

I made a reservation 2 weeks in advance for a 26' truck at the Rockford, Michigan location. The morning of our move no truck, no apology, and above all, no solution. Because it was the morning of the move, none of the competitors have a comparable truck. Penske absolutely sucks and I will never use them again! Dan Cory

Refuel Charge on Full Tank, but there are two tanks...

Updated by user Sep 27, 2012

I\'m in Dayton, not Rochester...

Original review Sep 27, 2012
I just returned a 26' Penske from the local dealer (Woodman Stop and Lock) in Dayton, Ohio. I refilled the tank to the top and climbed back in the cab to return the truck.

I noticed that the fuel gauge had not moved - so I thought it was slow. I called the company this morning to discuss the faulty fuel gauge and they informed me that they put over $50 in fuel in the truck! Impossible! I have the receipts to prove it - and can get surveillance from the gas station if it comes to that.

According to the truck, it got 7 miles per gallon, I put 63 miles on the truck - and I purchased 8.944 gallons. Do the math - I know I'm in the clear!
It turns out that they NEVER told me there are TWO TANKS on this truck. There is ONE fuel gauge, NO switch, NO labels...nothing to indicate the presence of a second tank.

The service rep, Justin, could not and would not help me. Unbelievable!

We have worked to resolve the issue as of 9-28. Thank you for your business. If you have any questions please call us at 1-800-GO-PENSKE.

It's called reading the fuel computer and doing the math. Secondly, they were closed and I left a message with the discrepancy.

I'm the a_ss? I see...what was your point again?

Guest

You ***. While yes, it would have been nice for the rental rep to have pointed out that there were 2 tanks on the vehicle, YOU should take responsibility for your own faults.

Your first clue should have been the half-full fuel gauge. If I fueled up a truck and it didn't read full, I would have stopped and called the company then, not after I returned the truck.

You also said that the truck gets 7 miles to the gallon - who told you that? I work for a competitor of Penske, and I never tell customers what to expect in fuel mileage as the number one variable in fuel economy is the driver!

Long story short, you a *** who had no business making such an ignorant post.

Before calling people names go check the website. Penske's own website lists fuel mileage for a 26' truck as 10 MPG, so 7 MPG is quite reasonable.

Other than that you were correct in your response.

Penske should have been called before moving a truck that had just been filled and the fuel guage didn't move. I;ve used them exclusively for years doing many long distance moves and found they are very reasonable and fair businesspeople, unlike UHaul which seems to have the goal of having you fill their tanks for them.

Ummmm... My penske has a computer that tells me how much I'm getting...

Maybe his did to. I HIGHLY doubt you work for a competitor or you would agree this is how penske 'gets' you on fuel. They charge 8$ gal for every gal they add if you aren't on fuel. HOWEVER...

If you don't know the tricks to getting to the 'full ' line... They are going to get a few gallons worth of money from you. I have two at this moment... We did everything they 'say' to so and yet we have YET...

In... 708 miles been able to get one to read full even doing the ... Start it... Then stop and add more fuel.

That is on both trucks. I am going to video us trying to get it to full for YouTube to show they are ripping people off if they charged. This is te 4 truck this summer and every time this happens and they shrug and say 'fill it full... Turn it on...

Turn it off... Fill to full again. It doesn't WORK.

Competitors would say 'hey... That doesn't happen with I haul or whichever one you work for...

Claims adjusters

Claims adjuster who complains about her work load and has me doing her leg work and still has not addressed my claim which happened on July 15,2012. Still no help by not giving me my physical which was ordered. I was in an accident in a Penske truck and still having issues that need to be addressed and she has done anything. If I had such a poor work performance, I would never been able to hold down a job. I guess i'll have to have a lawyer intervene for me. The claims adjuster is Carol Walley who has failed in her job performance

Penske truckleasing/worst company to work for

I want to start by saying that i've worked in severial different locations over the years due to being bumped around and what i have to say applies to all the shops i've been in.penske won't replace broken equipment, and don't like to follow OSHA laws.i've seen this result in people being injured, myself included, saftey is by far NOT their #1 priority even though they will say it is,proof is in the actions not the words, for the non union employees you have no benifits.i know of a district manager taking away payed holidays away from some workers because he didn't want to pay them overtime per the company handbook for the holiday they worked.i was present at a meeting where a manager implied layoffs if workers didn't scam jobs on the customer, but threats of layoffs where common play in that location anyway, and last but not least if you are not in a union position your pay rate is subject to be lowered at the whim of the district manager,(i happen to be a union employee)i've seen severial GOOD, PRODUCTIVE managers have their paychecks raided and hit with a demotion,i assume its because they were doing their jobs as managers and not following the company moto of unsafe/hostile work environments for everyone, there is a massive disconnect between corprate and the workers and i would not start a career with penske truck leasing,

Penske must be concerned about your posting. I can honestly say stay away from this company.

I was around this company in many locations. A main location was in NJ. The district location had 1300 pieces of equipment for literally 15 mechanics. That's 115 pieces to every mechanic.

As a customer, you need to realize that those odds are impossible to get the job done. Then they come out with percentages to motivate staff, every location is different. The company is a joke. Visit one of their parts rooms, they have no parts to complete the work.

Penske has lost the reputation it gained from the earlier years. The company is driven by numbers that only slave you toward absolute burn out, then they look to get rid of you.

Customer service person checking in the rental truck , ran to look at the truck , ran back and stated angrilly the gas guage did not read full , questioned why I didnt get gas I stated to get it back in time for check in without being charged an additional day I couldn't . He then stated that it was a 25 dollar fee on top of 5.00 per gallon to fill it . It doesnt mention the 25 fee in the contract at all . I then said go fill it I will wait here until you do to assess the charges . He then stated he didnt have time to fill it could be 20 min to 4 hours to do it ( he just walked in with fast food ) . He then told me to fill it since I didnt look busy ( I was in the middle of a 50 mile residential move ) then mentioned my partner sitting out in my car with her dog why doesnt she go fill it . I stated again through tears ( long move cash for keys tight time frame) in order to get the truck there not be charged for another day I didnt need it didnt get filled . He rescinded the 2nd day charge if of course we filled the *** truck .25 dollars later plus almost 80.00 to rent it for one day . We filled the next day mind you the rental truck because he didnt have time to . He doesnt deserve to be working there , he made up the 25 dollar fee that isnt in the contract , apparently it is an incovenience to fill a tank them selves . People who are moving like me on a tight time frame just need great customer service since we are going trough a very tough time already and over the holidays no less this happened the day prior to thanksgiving ! yeah, every rental company actually does charge a service fee for filling up the truck (or car) $25 is actually rather cheap. Try returning a car to enterprise without filling it up (slightly beyond) what you picked it up with.

Service fee plus markup on gas per gallon.

This is btw noted in the contracts for penske trucks, and in all the locations Ive been to there is a sign at the check out desk and they tell you this up front and it would not surprise me if they actually put a warning sticker somewhere on the dash board these days.

Penske

Penske left me stranded on the interstate for 3 hours, towed the truck to some *** hole at the bottom of a hollow, made me wait another 3 hours for a new truck and would not acknowledge my e-mails to their corporate center. I was a single woman traveling with a son. Started the saga at around 11 a.m., got back on the road at 6:30 (in the rain, after dark). Had been a repeat customer, but will never again. To the credit of the local office, they did let me keep the truck one extra day to unload, and did not make me return it 50 miles away. Of course, I had to miss a day of work and lost out on my moving crew due to that.
